My Two Cents on Svankmajer's Works
1. Down to The Cellar
Released in 1983, directed by Jan Svankmajer and produced by Eduard Galbavy. I like how Svankmajer managed to arrange a story line without a single script. For someone who is into surrealism like me, this is actually a very great short movie to watch and to sit and think what is actually going on in this movie.
2. Food
This one is something else. The three levels of story labeled as Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, from what I understand, is about life. In the breakfast scene, it is about people eating breakfast that comes out of a human's body system. The door the man came in from, is where life was. The door the other man left after serving the food is death. Life goes around like that, you eat food, you become food, and you die. In the Lunch scene is where superiority takes place. The scene shows two different man sitting at the same table. One is a rich man and the other is a poor man. The rich man eats first and the poor man eats what's left. After everything on the table are gone, the rich man starts to teach the poor man to eat what they have. And in the end, rich man fooled the poor man and became his food. What I understand here is that's what people with power do. They leave leftovers for lower people, starts to teach them how to work and in the end, they fool the lower people and took advantage for themselves. In the last scene, Dinner, it is all about the struggles to just stay alive. Sometimes in order to survive we just have to sacrifice ourselves.
