Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of sign systems around the world at this age. It is about how words and other signs defines something. In semiotics, a sign is anything that stands in for something other than itself. This lesson focuses primarily on linguistic signs. Semiotics also relate to how words have different meanings through time. For example, back in the old days, mice is just a dirty little rodent you find under your kitchen counter but in the modern days, mice is a computer accessory that almost everyone who owns a computer, owns it.

This field focuses on understanding how people express the meaning of signs and symbols, including how people visually communicate through metaphor, analogy, allegory, metonymy, symbolism and other means of expression. Green means go, red means stop. The big red "M" is McDonalds and the green mermaid in a circle is Starbucks. Semiotics made everything easier to understand.

Because people have developed the ability to assign meaning with words, we are able to describe abstract meanings. This means we have words to explain things we can't actually see. As an example, we can use the word 'hot' to explain how amazing a woman is without any thought or reference to temperature. The usage is separate from its history.

Semiotics is what makes the world better.
